This year’s season finales*, ranked by yours truly

*Of shows that I watch. Sorry, that means no LOST, 24, etc. Should I have included True Blood and Mad Men? It feels like those were a million years ago. There are four categories, ranging from the best to the worst. As usual, totally biassed. SPOILERS. Obviously.

Totally Awesome/Loved It

Totally Awesome/Loved It

  1. Big Love
  2. Ugly Betty
  3. Gossip Girl
  4. Modern Family

Big Love was my favourite finale, it delivered on everything. And they’re out now! Can’t wait for next season.

Ugly Betty. I would have loved a Daniel/Betty kiss, but you’re forgiven, everything was perfect. By the way, I’m holding prayer circles at my house every week for the movie to happen, everyone’s welcome to join.

I know what you’re thinking – Gossip Girl? Yes, this was the worst season ever, a complete disaster. BUT, the finale was perfect, reminiscent of season 1 even. Also, I’m someone who strongly believes in positive reinforcement. I did say I was going to be biassed –  I will love these characters and show no matter what. I mean, hello, Chuck Bass got shot and was left bleeding in the middle of the road a million miles away from home. Jenny is gone! At least for now. And Nate is spending the summer taking advantage of Chuck’s black book. GG earns its spot in RELATIVE terms.

I usually just lump Modern Family in with Community and The Big Bang Theory, but I laughed a million times more during the MF finale. Also, Phil wins for Best TV Dad.

Well Done/High Five!

Well Done/High Five!

  1. United States of Tara
  2. Damages
  3. Californication
  4. The Vampire Diaries
  5. The Big Bang Theory
  6. Community

United States of Tara would have been in the first category, but I’m starting to get tired of the whole “Let’s find out why Tara’s so fucked up” storyline. ALSO, OMG YOUR SISTER WAS JUST LEFT AT THE ALTER. THIS NIGHT ISN’T ABOUT YOU TARA! Seth Gabel’s storyline seems to be over, really sad. I cried myself to sleep that night. Of course he had to be a Republican! Oh and yes, I did take a million screenshots when Marshall and Lionel kissed.

Californication. GOD HANK, can’t you just stay out of trouble for five minutes? So much well-played drama in the finale. HOWEVER, how many times are we going to do Hank and Karen break up, Hank and Karen are soulmates, Hank and Karen try again, Hank screws up, Hank and Karen break up? Either keep them together or move on. Another thing – Karen, if you’re going to hate on Hank (which you have many reasons to), don’t do it for actions that were total misunderstandings, there’s only so much you can blame an idiot. That being said, Hank totally completes me.

Community – I like Jeff and Annie together.

Underwhelming/Okay

Underwhelming/Okay

  1. The Mentalist
  2. The Good Wife

I’ve never been one for procedurals, but I love The Mentalist and expected a little better. Even the perfection that is Simon Baker couldn’t keep me from browsing Tumblr while I watched the finale.

The Good Wife actually was on par with the rest of its season so I guess I can’t be too hard on it. It’s just never been one of my favourites – I can’t understand why everyone has such a TV hard-on for it. I really can’t. The ending was blah to me too, OMG WILL THE GOOD WIFE STAND NEXT TO HER HUSBAND OR DECIDE TO HAVE AN AFFAIR WITH HER PITIFUL YET ATTRACTIVE CO-WORKER?! Edge of my seat for next season.

Terrible/Unnecessary/WHAT

Terrible/Unnecessary/WHAT

  1. Private Practice
  2. Grey’s Anatomy
  3. Brothers & Sisters

I thought the killing characters for no reason to create season finale drama trend was over a couple of seasons ago? I guess not. Poor Dell. First his wife dies and his house burns down. Then he dies, leaving his daughter an orphan… really? George O’Malley 2.0. An amazing season of episodes that I LOVED, all ruined in one finale.

I’ll admit, Grey’s Anatomy shouldn’t be on this list – I never watched the finale. But you know what, I couldn’t make it to the finale. This season was so terrible I had to stop watching. And I am one of the most loyal TV fans ever. Trust me. Shonda Rhimes, you need some new ideas.

Brothers & Sisters. This is the most heartbreaking one for me, B&S used to be my favourite show! Now it can barely get through an episode and apparently even the actors are over it. Rob Lowe decided he wants to move on, obviously the best solution is to kill him off, fine. But in a multi-car crash involving the whole family? And then there’s Saul who randomly has HIV. What? Not to mention, in future episodes, all cast members won’t be available for all episodes because of budget cuts. SO NO MORE WALKER FAMILY DINNERS. Ugh, just cancel it then.

I hate to end on a bitter note. And I just read over everything and feel terrible about calling Hank an idiot. So guys seriously, Hank Moody is the best ever.

Is Rob Lowe a narcissist?

There are many pleasures I enjoy as an occasional blogger, one of them (okay, maybe the only one) is getting to see what search terms have brought people to NYCW.

What I’ve found from looking at recent search terms is that people have a lot of questions regarding homosexuality. Here are just a few examples (I added in capitals and punctuation where appropriate):

  • Do any straight men watch Supernatural?
  • Is Matt Czuchry gay?
  • Matt Czuchry is gay.
  • Howie Day gay
  • McDreamy McSteamy gay
  • Lead singer of The Script and Matt Dallas

First of all – really? Is the lead singer of The Script dating Matt Dallas?! Wow, seriously hot match right there. I can’t wait for candids to come out. Next, to answer your burning questions, from my own knowledge, I don’t believe Matt Czuchry is gay, and Howie Day is definitely not (see bizarre relationship with Britney from years ago and many references to girls on stage). As for McDreamy and McSteamy – I wish!

Do any straight men watch Supernatural? From personal experience, I have not yet met a straight man who watches Supernatural. But maybe we can start a tally or something? Leave a comment if you know of one!

Speaking of Matt Czuchry, a few of you are seriously curious about him.

  • Matt Czuchry, personal life
  • Matt Czuchry, family origin
  • Matt Czuchry, sexy
  • Matt Czuchry, gay

God guys, just go watch The Good Wife or Gilmore Girls reruns and stay off Google for a little bit.

  • Are you high? He looks like Matthew McConaughey!
  • Show fucking.

What’s show fucking? And why are you coming here for it?!

  • Is Rob Lowe a narcissist?

You know, I don’t know if he is one, but I sure as hell am mad at him for leaving Brothers & Sisters.

  • If you win me, I will undress.

Mmmm, hot. What do I have to do?

  • Guys, I really fucked up
  • Curtis is so mad right now
  • Russell Brand on Prison Break

Wait… what?

Chuck Bass really brings in the hits. So many people who share in the same unhealthy obsessive love for him. Let’s start our own fan club guys!

  • I love you too Chuck Bass!
  • Brand of the white Chuck Bass (what?)
  • Chuck Bass, favourite brands
  • What does Chuck Bass like and dislike?
  • Chuck Bass is my life.
  • Chuck Bass, apartment
  • Why did Chuck and Blair breakup?

Since we’re on the topic of Chuck, lots of people seem to be curious about what BlackBerry Chuck has.

  • Chuck Bass’s BlackBerry
  • What BlackBerry does Chuck Bass have?
  • BlackBerry Chuck Bass

You get the picture.

So today, here at NYCW, I’ve decided to do some investigative work for you guys to find out what BlackBerry Chuck uses. While Chuck previously sported an LG Dare (so not Chuck Bass), he recently upgraded to a BlackBerry. Through my research on blackberry.com, Google Images, and season 3 Gossip Girl episodes, I have concluded that Chuck uses the BlackBerry Tour 9630. You can thank me later.

Don’t push your Chuck.

Just so you guys know, I was debating between this title and “You’ve lost your muchness”, in the end I chose Gossip Girl over Alice in Wonderland, even though Gossip Girl doesn’t deserve shit from me right now.

Did that sound bitter? I’m not bitter. I’m not disappointed. Gossip Girl has completely lived up to expectations. Season 2 and 3 have been just as brilliant as Season 1. Jenny is my favourite character. They’re totally employing Kevin Zegers’ full potential and not making me dislike him. Dan and Vanessa are a match made in heaven, not to mention, Dan looks ravishing in a wife beater. Chace Crawford deserves an Emmy for his acting. I love how he much he’s learned and grown as an actor. Blair is totally back to Queen B status and I love it. Chuck’s storyline does him so much justice. And his mom is so cool, I want to be her when I grow up. Serena is totally not a whore and I want to model my life after hers. Rufus is the best husband ever, I’d be lucky to meet a man half as epic as he is.

Moving on.

I saw Alice in Wonderland this week. With my two siblings, AND my two little cousins. It was such a family affair. 3D glasses are great for photo-ops aren’t they? Sara is totally rocking a jean jacket by the way, AND polka dot pants. Bold. Very bold.

Alice

As for the movie, I really enjoyed it. I think it helped that I went in with low expectations. I really liked all of the characters, especially the Hatter and Red Queen, obviously. Who else sensed a ton of sexual tension between Alice and Mad Hatter? I was dying for them to just jump on top of each other or something… And the scene at the end with the Hatter was heartbreaking, poor guy. I also enjoyed the White Queen’s constant hand gestures. Very convincing. Some really great lines as well, aside from losing your muchness – imagining six impossible things before breakfast, “I’m investigating things that begin with the letter M”, and of course “You’re mad, bonkers, off your head! But I’ll tell you a secret: All the best people are.” Really sweet.

I’ve heard people saying Johnny Depp’s dancing at the end was awkward and out of place, but I loved it! Futterwagoning for the win. Am I right or am I right?

We’ll steal a car and crash in the ocean

United States of Tara

  • I started watching United States of Tara last night and love it so far! When I saw that Diablo Cody is one of the creators/producers, I went ughhh in my head, but I take that back now! Of course, it helps that John Corbett, aka Aidan/perfect dude from Sex and the City who I would have picked over Big ANY DAY plays Tara’s husband. The show is good too though. If you haven’t heard of it – Tara has multiple personalities – three in addition to herself: Buck, Alice, and T. I love that Max sleeping with one of the other personalities would be considered cheating. And that Buck calls Marshall Marsha.

Secret Diary of a Callgirl

  • Next up, Secret Diary of a Call Girl. I broke my number one rule and started on season 2. BUT that’s all they had on demand okay. Whatever. Not as promising as US of Tara, but I’m warming up to it. One thing – I can’t differentiate between Hannah’s ex and her new guy. Ben and Alex. They look virtually the same! I keep going oh that’s Alex, wait, why is she talking to him about her work, I thought he doesn’t know!! OH, never mind, that’s actually Ben. Also, BAMBI is unbearable. I want to scream STFU at her every time she comes on screen.
  • Anyway, aside from new shows on my to-do list, Gossip Girl is coming back tomorrow! In my heart of hearts, I know the rest of the season is probably going to be as disappointing as the first half, but I do have a morsel of hope left. I mean, Chuck finally has a major storyline and Blair is apparently going from “victim to vixen” – Josh Schwartz’s words, not mine. So we’ll see. I have my fingers crossed. Also, ten points for this overdramatic, soap opera trailer Gossip Girl, well done.
  • Speaking of Gossip Girl, I think what would really redeem it for me, is if Jenny were to die a gruesome, tragic death in the season finale. Take note CW. We’re over her.

Re: 2009

Is this late? The obsessive compulsive side of me doesn’t like that this is coming after the “Happy 2010!” post. Ok, I’ll deal. So will you I hope.

Anyway, I saw everyone doing their 2009 lists – lists of accomplishments, favourites, etc., and wanted my own. But then this year wasn’t a lot of firsts or accomplishments for me and I felt really inadequate, so I just avoided it. BUT, I wouldn’t feel right not having my own list, so I’m just going to put together a jumbled list of what I remember and therefore what must have been the most significant. There will be an emphasis on celebrities and TV shows, but these are two of my favourite things, so you really shouldn’t be surprised. Also note,  in my attempt to make this list more valid, everything is in chronological order… go me!

Russell Brand, Matt Smith & Dostana

1. My newfound obsession with Russell Brand flowed from 2008 straight into 2009. January was full of repeated viewings of Shame, Doing Life, Ponderland, and The Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2006 & 2007. Actually, this is highly appropriate for a post about 2009 since Russ is back for 2009’s Big Fat Quiz of the Year!

2. Matt Smith was cast as the eleventh doctor to replace David Tennant in Doctor Who. Immediately after hearing the news and seeing an interview with Matt Smith, I decided I was in love with him and was going to become a Doctor Who fan just to show my support… needless to say, this didn’t happen, but I still hold a small appreciation for Matt Smith. Maybe one day I will actually watch an episode of Doctor Who, who knows? (I know all you Doctor Who fans are cringing or considering closing your tab right now… sorry!)

3. January also marked a huge first for me – my first Bollywood movie! No, I wasn’t cast in one, I just watched one – Dostana – a movie about two men who pretend to be gay just so that they can rent an apartment. They also fall in love with the same girl. Drama! It was fun! I kind of understood what they were saying, but thank god for subtitles. Along with the undeniable eye candy, it was a great first experience. No, I haven’t seen another Bollywood movie since then. Maybe I’ll add that to my list of resolutions?

BlackBerry, Zac Efron, The Hills, and Tumblr

4. I got my BlackBerry and said goodbye to my pink Razr (I know, I know – I held onto it for too long didn’t I?).

5. Never did I think that I would become a fan of  that kid from High School Musical, but something changed when the 17 Again promos started coming out…. and then when 17 Again actually came out, that was it. And this was a different kind of love, not the temporary, fleeting kind (see Matt Smith), but a more meaningful kind. Uh, stop judging me, go watch 17 Again.

6. After watching every season of Laguna Beach and The Hills, this was the year that I could take no more. This means one of two things – either I finally grew out of “reality” shows this year, or The Hills hit a new low, even for The Hills. Congrats guys.

7. TUMBLR! No, Tumblr wasn’t introduced this year, but this was the year I joined, therefore the year that counts. If you haven’t joined yet, what are you waiting for?! Where else will you get to post random pictures and videos without any explanation required? Microblogging is the way to go. Having made 2732 posts since May, you can trust me on that.

Prison Break, Chuck & Blair, Public Enemies, & Post Grad

8. Prison Break ended this year, Michael and Lincoln were finally able to escape prison… permanently. I thought they deserved a kudos here. I for one enjoyed every season, and the movie. I miss you guys already!

9. Gossip Girl fans everywhere died a little inside when Chuck and Blair finally got together – wait, was that just me? Either way, one of the highlights of 2009 I would say.

10. Public Enemies. Johnny Depp. Christian Bale. Do I need to say anything else?

11. Post Grad wasn’t the most awesome movie ever, but boy, could I relate. What am I going to do when I finally graduate? Hmmm… maybe I too will have the opportunity to give up the perfect job to be with the guy of my dreams. Hey, a girl can dream.

Lady Gaga, Inglourious Basterds, iMac, & Howie Day

12. The Fame came out in 2008, but 2009 was clearly the year of Gaga – and when I finally decided to give her a try. Thank god, because I don’t know if I would have had my daily dose of pop music otherwise.

13. Inglourious Basterds. Awesome.

14. I got my 24″ iMac this year and finally joined the Mac club. I can say with 100% certainty that this was the happiest day of my life.

15. You probably haven’t heard of Howie Day. And if you have, all you most likely know him for is Collide, when really, he should be know for his first album, Australia. Anyway, fans waited SIX years for a new album, and finally, this year, Sound the Alarm came out. Here’s a biased review: it was perfect.

Mad Men, NYCW, Adam Lambert, & Sex and the City

16. Mad Men – for having an amazing season this year. One of the best shows on TV right now.

17. newyorkcanwait.com is born. I blog… once in awhile.

18. I’m not a fan of American Idol, but Adam Lambert’s album, For Your Entertainment, is one of my favourites this year. “There he goes, my baby walks so slow, sexual tic tac toe“, I could leave it on repeat for the next five years.

19. I started the year watching Russell Brand and ended it by marathoning all six seasons of Sex and the City. I wouldn’t have spent my limited Internet allowance (thanks Rogers) any other way.

If you made it through the list, well done! If you just skimmed through the pictures, don’t worry, I forgive you. Here’s to 2010, may it be filled with a lot more to blog about!
